Kristina Wong and the Auntie Sewing Squad

Sunday, May 15, 2:00 pm (galleries open from 3:30–5:00 pm)

About the Program

In March 2020, activist and comedian Kristina Wong didn’t know she was about to start a massive mutual-aid network, but that’s indeed what the Auntie Sewing Squad became. Led mostly by women of color, the “Aunties” began by making masks for those most vulnerable and soon found themselves supplying thousands of face coverings for first responders, farmworkers, incarcerated people, and communities in need.

To celebrate the recent release of the book The Auntie Sewing Squad Guide to Mask Making, Radical Care, and Racial Justice, enjoy a panel discussion moderated by UCLA Professor of Asian American Studies Grace Kyungwon Hong. Hear from Kristina Wong and fellow sewing squad members Preeti SharmaJenni Kuida, and Badly Licked Bear about how this grassroots social justice mission grew to fill a critical gap in care across the country.

Order a copy of the book from Village Well Books and Coffee. Write “Pick up at the Skirball” in the notes/instructions section at checkout. A book signing follows the program.
